What Is VPN?

Have you ever considered about having a VPN?

I’m sure you’ve heard of the acronym “VPN”. Didn’t you ever wonder about what is this? Yeah let’s get to know about VPNs in this article. VPN stands for Virtual Private Network. Work Virtual is said because when using a VPN you’re not using a physical connection with your destination and It is said Private because it encrypts your activity before sending it, and decrypts it at the destination.

“A computer lets you make more mistakes faster than any other invention with the possible exceptions of handguns and Tequila.” — Mitch Ratcliffe

What VPNs basically do is it secure your web traffic and protect your online anonymity from spies and anyone who wants to steal or track your data. (You are safe finally!!)
If you know how much it is vulnerable to transmit data through insecure internet connections,You may get frightened for sure.

In simply way we can say a VPN creates a virtual encrypted tunnel between you and a remote server operated by a VPN service. Therefore all the internet traffic you are using routed through this tunnel thus your data is secure from external parties like spies and hackers or even the government. And the best of using a VPN is your web traffic will looks like it’s coming from that VPN server’s IP address, which mask your IP address.

Imagine when you type something in your browser and hit enter, the data will reach to the VPN server through a tunnel which is a secure path that anyone can’t spy on you. After data reaches to the VPN server this data will exits to the public internet from the VPN server. So it is difficult to trace back to you, since it appears to be coming from the VPN server.

Consider the public Wi-Fi network which may be in a library, coffee shop or airport. Normally you might connect without a second thought. But do you know who might be watching the traffic on the network. Just because it named “Hilton Hotel Visitors WiFi” it doesn’t mean it owned by the popular five star hotel. It might be operated by a thief who’s after your personal data. Think about all your passwords, banking data, credit card informations. You're giving a pool of data for these spiece by using these unsafe public network points

And other advantage of this VPN is we can access websites which are restricted in your country or region.(That’s cool right?) For instance if you are in a country which blocked the access to the facebook, you  can have a VPN that have it’s server located in United States therefore you can access to facebook because your web traffic is visible as it’s coming from the US. VPN can spoof or trick the internet into thinking you’re in a different location.

So after all why some people still don’t use VPN? Because most of them don’t have any idea that they have a security risk when the surfing in public Wi-Fi network. And another reason is it slows down your internet speed because it encrypts your data. And rerouting your internet makes your data to go longer path than when using internet without a VPN. So speed loss can’t be avoided. After all every things in this world coming with a cost, same for the VPN services, they are costly. But there are some free VPNs but they either display tons of ads or sell your information to other parties. And those free VPN services might use low bit encryption. (Between 256bit encryption Vs 128bit encryption, choose a higher bit (256) encryption VPN service because it tighten you security than the lower bit encryption.)

What I am Finally conveying is Even if you have a free VPN it is safer than surfing internet without a VPN.
